Express Publishes Macedonia in NATO 2008 Advertisement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 13, 2008 – In light of Greece’s Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis’ visit to Washington, D.C. and the increase of Greek propaganda against Macedonia and Macedonians, the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) published a paid advertisement in the Express – a Washington Post publication. Click HERE to view the advertisement.

Express is a publication that is distributed throughout Washington, D.C., parts of Virginia, and Maryland.  The readership is a very diverse group, mainly including government officials, advocacy groups, think tank organization staff, Congressional staffers, and the finance community.

UMD timed this advertisement with the visit of the Greek Foreign Minister who today held a series of public and private events, discussions, and meetings that were mainly focused around its unilateral name dispute over Macedonia’s name and Macedonia’s membership into NATO.  More importantly, the purpose of this advertisement was to educate the American public about the false and unfounded accusations that Greece has made regarding Macedonia since its independence.

Last week, urging her to reiterate America’s recognition of Macedonia’s constitutional name, support for Macedonia’s NATO admission, and position that the “name dispute” between Greece and Macedonia is immaterial to Macedonia’s NATO bid during her upcoming meeting with the Greek Foreign Minister on February 14, 2008.  To read the full text of the letter, click ( UMD Sends Letter to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Regarding Greece ).  UMD takes this opportunity to thank its members and friends who participated in our grassroots efforts by sending a letter to Secretary Rice in the last two weeks.

UMD’s “Macedonia in NATO 2008” advocacy campaign has been one of the organization’s top priorities since it was founded in 2004.  As you are all aware, leaders of the then international community met in 1913, in Bucharest, to decide Macedonia’s future.  This year, the leaders of today’s international community will meet, once again, 95 years later, in Bucharest, to decide Macedonia’s future.  We are certain that all obstacles will be overcome – Macedonia’s future looks bright.
